License Information

Types of Rights Available

For all types of rights below, any unauthorized use or unlicensed use of Hong Kong Lightbox products shall entitle Hong Kong Lightbox to exercise all legal rights and remedies available to it. In event that the Licensed Material featuring a person is used in a manner that implies endorsement or use of or a connection to a product or service by that model without authorization, unless a statement indicates that is used for illustrative purposes only, Hong Kong Lightbox reserves the right to charge the Licensee a fee equal to twenty times of Hong Kong Lightbox normal licence fee for use of the Licensed Material, plus legal fees and costs incurred therein.

Rigths-Managed (RM)

Rights-managed products are licensed on a use-by-use basis. The licensing fee is calculated from several factors including file size, placement, print run, duration of use and geographic distribution. Specific usage rights will be granted according to information submitted by you at the time of ordering a rights-managed product. You can use our price calculator at “myCart” or Price agreed in writing for any additional rights after negotiation with us . Exclusive rights are available for purchase of some rights-managed products. All licenses of rights-managed products are subject to Hong Kong Lightbox License Agreement – Rights-Managed.

Royalty-Free (RF)

Royalty-free products can be used for multiple projects or clients by the same firm who made the purchase . Price of Royalty-free product is mainly based on the file size of the product and the maximum number of users shall not exceed 10 people within the same purchasing company. No use-by-use based additional royalties are required. The rights granted for the product content are non-transferable and non-resalable. This means a RF product used in a derivative work by the purchaser which licensed to its client or any other person, the latter then may not use the licensed product separately from the derivative work. Royalty-free licenses are non-exclusive. All licenses of royalty-free products are subject to Hong Kong Lightbox License Agreement – Royalty-Free.

Editorial Use

Editorial rights are licensed on a use-by-use basis. Use in an “editorial” manner refers to use relating to subject matters that are newsworthy or of public interest. Products available for editorial use will be specified by Hong Kong Lightbox, and the Hong Kong Lightbox License Agreement – Editorial Use shall apply. For any other use, such as commercial, promotional, advertising or merchandising use, you must write to us for permission in writing, and the Hong Kong Lightbox License Agreement – Rights-Managed shall apply.

“Comping” & Preview Use

Hong Kong Lightbox permits certain products in low resolution format to be used free of charge (or in some cases for a minimal fee) for a limited duration, if they are used only for noncommercial use and solely for test or sample purposes, such as dummies at artworks. These rights are governed by the Hong Kong Lightbox License Agreement – Comping File. Comping files may be used to take a closer look at a particular image or to create materials for proofing presentations to clients. Comping files are not licensed for use in final projects, whether for internal or external use.
